A stranger is waiting to break him tonight. Jacob is finally going home, to the brother he cheated, and the four hundred men riding to meet him. Something else gets a grip on him first, and he will not let go. That refusal is the first time the account calls him a prince.

Where it points
"I have seen God face to face", and lived, Jacob said. Set that beside a line John wrote, centuries later: "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him." Jacob met God in a hidden, frightening way, at the cost of his own hip. Jesus Christ showed God openly, with a face, a voice, and a name you're allowed to ask for. The stranger at Jabbok wouldn't give his name. Jesus gives his to anyone who asks.
